Snack Shack Charm Quilt

We took the scenic route on our way home from blueberry picking last summer and stumbled upon a quilt shop in the middle of an old country road. It was an old house filled with fabric, vintage buttons, and vintage trims. I stocked up on buttons and trims while Lo picked up a few charm packs.

Once we were home, Lo was eager to get started on her first quilt. She chose Crystal Manning’s Snack Shack for her main fabric and Ruby Star Society’s Best Day Ever Ice Cream in Golden for her backing. The pink solid is Riley Blake’s Super Pink Confetti Cotton, and the binding is the Best Day Ever Hearts in Posy Pink.

Since it was her first quilt, I made up a simple checkerboard quilt pattern for her to follow. She sorted her charm pack fabrics into piles of four and then sewed each set of four together. Once sewn and pressed, I had her trim her squares to 8.5″. She cut 8.5″ squares from the Confetti Cotton, then planned her layout before sewing the blocks together.

Once she finished her quilt top, we discussed quilting patterns. She loves the squiggles I used on a couple of other quilts, and chose that design for hers. Stitch is #1397 on my Bernina 770QE. I had Quilter’s Dream Bamboo batting on hand, and it made for a lovely, drapey quilt that is perfect for couch lounging and snuggling.

By this point, she didn’t want to machine sew anymore, so I helped by sewing the binding to the back. She found three fun labels in my stash, and we added them to the back.

I am so proud of her! She enjoys showing it off to friends when they come over. I can’t wait to share what she sews next!
