Neco Drop Skirt

20180715_154225.jpgHave you been following along with Sew My Style on Instagram and Facebook? I want to participate more, but most of the patterns aren’t something I would wear often or I already own a similar commercial pattern. (I am excited to get started on my True Bias Landers this month, though! I know, I’m a month behind.)

Last year, there were a few patterns by Sarah Blaho of Cali Faye Collection in the line-up. Since I bought several of her patterns years ago, I decided to print them out and sew them. The first pattern on my list to make was with the Pocket Skirt. I have a similar skirt from LOFT, and I was excited to recreate it. Unfortunately, it was a hot mess, and like several other participants, I gave up and went a different direction. I decided to salvage my out of print hedgehog fabric and attempted to make the Drop Skirt.20180715_154206Since the size chart was not accurate on the Pocket Skirt, I decided to measure the waistband pieces on the Drop Skirt before cutting into my remaining fabric. Unfortunately, much like the Pocket Skirt, the Drop Skirt waistband pieces didn’t correspond with the size chart provided. In the listing photo, Sarah is wearing the skirt on her hip, which is the look I wanted, but according to the pattern, it is worn at the waist. Also, after consulting with a few sewing friends who also had issues with one or both skirts, we realized the size chart varies between patterns depending on how old they are, so keep that in mind, too, if you’re considering one of her patterns.

At the end of the day, I drafted my own skirt, and I love it! I didn’t have an invisible zipper on hand, but I’m still happy with how it turned out. I’ve worn this skirt pretty often over the last year, and it’s perfect on hot summer days. It pairs well with tees or casual tops, and I’ve paired it with booties and a denim jacket in the fall.

Have you had a pattern not work for you? Do you scrap it and move on to something completely different or move on to a tried and true pattern/designer to salvage it?
