After seeing so many great checkered dresses everywhere this spring, I couldn’t resist purchasing this Michael Miller Sommer double gauze gingham from my local fabric shop a couple of months ago. It’s a nice weight, but I found it unravels fairly easily and can get slightly distorted if you’re not careful. I sewed French seams to prevent further fraying and lined it with a 54″ 100% cotton lining I found at a different shop.

The pattern I used is M7381 View A in size XS based on my measurements. I shortened the skirt my usual 2″, and added a lining piece to the skirt. I love the shoulder pleats at the bodice, which I deviated from the instructions and did not stitch them down.I cut the skirt lining an additional inch shorter, and I waited to stitch down my elastic until I tried on the skirt. I love the fullness the cotton lining provides, even when it’s not windy, so I may add it on any future versions I make.

Admittedly, the one thing I wish I had accounted for is lining up the pattern placement on the skirt pleats. If I had paid attention, I would have tried to line up the pattern with the front bodice. I finished the bodice and set it aside for a couple of months while I planned my daughter’s birthday, so I somewhat disregarded the overall design by the time I returned to it and cut the skirt panels.Regardless, I love this dress! I have seen a few versions online and am amazed how different they all look based on fabric selection. So what’s inspired you this year?
