McCall’s Spring Fitted Top

IMG_0781I bought M7542 the minute it became available. I initially intended to make View D, but I soon realized I didn’t have enough of this floral double gauze. I could have purchased more, but it was Saturday afternoon and my local fabric shop had closed for the weekend…and I wanted to wear my new shirt asap! As a result, I decided to keep it simple, and I am so glad I did!

I made the size 6 with an A/B cup and shortened it by 1″ at the waist. I used bias tape for the neckline in order to keep it simple. I made the bias tape extra long, so I just tie a bow instead of using a button and loop for the back closure. The instructions were easy to follow, and it came with separate cup sizes, so it made it easy to get the fit right on the first try. I also love that it has back shoulder darts! The fabric I used is a double gauze by Camelot Fabrics, and it is a dream to sew!

IMG_0785I love that I can wear it with jeans and look put together at the park- even on those windy days when my hair is flying in every direction. Ha! It will also pair nicely with a couple of skirts I’ve previously made. As a SAHM, I tend to gravitate towards loosely fitted, casual wear, so this fitted top is a bit of an aberration from my usual wardrobe. I’m already planning my next one, but it will have a slightly looser, longer fit with tulip or bell sleeves.

IMG_0744What kind of basics do you typically sew? Is there a “go-to” pattern in your archive that you love to use for a well fitted basic top?

I was a SAHM for 6 years and work part time now, but I can relate to the need for casual basics that look put together but are very comfortable. I usually gravitate toward knits and lately have preferred button down shirts. I love all your makes, perused several of your posts and you have a lot of adorable handmades!

Thank you!! It’s a challenge to find the balance, but it’s nice having a closet full of things that work for various occasions. 🙂
