Buffalo Plaid Shirt Dress

I bought Simplicity 8014 this past summer with the plan to make it in a chambray dot, but life happened, and I never made it. I came across it again when I was cleaning my sewing room and knew I had to make a flannel version for winter.

I ordered a few yards of Robert Kaufman’s red buffalo plaid from their Burly Beavers collection and set out to make a blended version of View C and D. I stumbled on these cute wooden buttons at Joann, and they had just the right amount I needed.

Overall, it was a fairly easy sew, and I think an adventurous beginner can give it a try. Just take your time, and practice your button holes on scraps. I’m petite (5’1″), so I made a size 6 and shortened the dress by 2 inches at the waist. I also shortened the sleeves a bit, so they sit right at my wrist when straight, but since it’s Texas, I will probably wear them pushed up a bit like I did below. Our temps have been in the mid 70’s all weekend!

The pattern doesn’t come with an inner yoke, but I added one to enclose the seam across the back and collar. I used scraps I had of Moda’s Purebred for the yolk and pockets. I sewed French seams along the sides and pocket, and I used bias tape for the hem instead of the facing the pattern called for.

I love the pleats on the cuff of the sleeves as well. I really like the overall relaxed fit of this dress and am looking forward to making another version soon. I may add a pleat instead of gathering the back for a different look on the next one. This is one of my favorite makes to date! I am so glad I was able to wear it this past weekend for Christmas Eve dinner!

Tell me, what was your most recent sew? Or is there a pattern you really want to make?
